Wouldn't adding the Gnome 3 PPA wipe out my Unity desktop? I think I
tried it before and I had to roll back all the changes.

The vala plugin is only for autocompletion and auto-indentation.
However, anjuta 3.0 (from the gnome3 ppa) can of course create vala
projects, see also the tutorials on developer.gnome.org. Anjuta 2.32 was
released quite some time ago and vala wasn't that big back then.

Sorry, my bad. Was expecting to be able to create Vala projects and
stuff from the Anjuta project creator, does the plugin just do syntax
highlighting and code completion?

Sorry, probabl
I'm uncertain if this is just an issue with the vala package: I've
purged everything and just installed the default Anjuta (which install
libvala-0.10-0 as a dep) but I still can't load the Vala plugin.
I've successfully installed the official Ubuntu valac-0.12 package, but
still Anjuta won't load
I added "vala" as affected package. I think launchpad is the correct way
to report this issues at least I don't know of any other.

Hi Johannes
Apologies, but there isn't a vala installation candidate in the standard
Ubuntu install:
$ sudo apt-get install vala

I am just the upstream maintainer and I don't use Ubuntu myself so I
cannot tell you which version works but I assume that just disabling the
vala-ppa and running then installing the "vala" package should do.
Actually installing anjuta should automatically pull in the correct
version of vala if Ubu
I also note that this was the version of Vala I was recommended to
install by the Ubuntu community documentation:

OK, thanks for the tip. I can un-install the upstream ppa for vala, but
where can I install vala from that will work with the standard ubuntu
build of anjuta? I couldn't see it in the ubuntu software centre
normally which is why I installed the upstream ppa.

If you start using upstream ppas, please do the same for anjuta and
install 3.0 from the gnome3 ppa. It is not unlikely that different vala
version are not supported by anjuta as it uses internal methods of
libvala which doesn't have a stable API.
