Marking this bug invalid. Turns out it was an egregious memory leak in
VLC tanking the whole system. Was finally able to SSH in tonight during
this bug and kill VLC.

Reproducing the bug took several minutes. During this time I tried
things like running other programs that also use sound (banshee,
VirtualBox), sliding the volume up and down, changing my monitor
configuration between clone and extended displays, and so on.

yes after reproducing the bug you have to reboot but NP, errors are grabbed in
logfiles.

HDMI audio output hard freez
I'd love to comply, but as the system is hard-frozen when this bug
occurs, I can't run any commands at that point. It's necessary to hold
the power button to do a hard shutdown.
I'll report back if any of the solutions on the wiki page linked help.
