Reproducing the bug took several minutes. During this time I tried
things like running other programs that also use sound (banshee,
VirtualBox), sliding the volume up and down, changing my monitor
configuration between clone and extended displays, and so on.

None of these seemed to have a direct effect. Eventually after perfectly
behaving for perhaps five or ten minutes, the sound cut out, and
directly after, system performance seemed to degrade to unusabillty
pretty quickly. I tried to switch to a VT but was unable. I am not sure
if X were misbehaving or the kernel.

Either way, here are all the attachments.
