I agree with Saaddick.
Selecting "Window Decoration" in Compizconfig settings manager returned
my title bar and control buttons.

Well, didn't reinstalled but ran
exec compiz --replace ccp
in terminal and all effects started working and the window titles are
there yet. Rats!

Anyhow, compiz effects are not working on my laptop (but the settings
suggested by saaddick actually solve the issue with window titles). Will
try reinstalling compiz...

I managed to get mine working, not exactly sure how but I:
1) Reinstalled compiz and compizconfig
2) Have the following settings enabled in compizconfig settings manager:
Composite, Gnome Compatibility, Open Gl, Desktop Cube, Rotate Cube,

This happened to me exactly as masongup said. It worked fine, I played
around in compizconfig settings manager, then this problem. It works
when compiz is disabled (ie with metacity)

On my system, this seems to only happen when the 3D acceleration is
running. I rebooted into Unity and everything was okay. I also logged
into classic (no effects) and everything was okay as well.
Also, everything worked fine when I first installed it. It only started
