Not sure what this error in the log file is saying, though the only
noticeable difference between the OS on the two machines is the first
computer (which does not work with the first network adapter) is running
64-bit Ubuntu whereas the computer which the adapter works on has i386
architecture.

There has to be a slight difference somewhere in the two systems. Are
they at the same kernel version? You can find out by looking at the
output of 'uname -a" and comparing the two (the result of "dpkg -l
linux-image" is also quite useful). I'm guessing the devices are not the
same brand and model,
The current working ethernet/usb device on that computer is connected to
the same hub on the same port as the "defective" one had been.

other connections on the computer. However, a different usb to ethernet
device is also working without trouble on the original machine which had
trouble. So bot

Under the Network Connections GUI, no other interface existed (this
device connects via usb to ethernet). I tried creating a new connection
using the MAC address of the usb device and setting the routes to only
use that connection for resources in its network, but the issue remains.

Sounds to me like this is an issue with the default gateway setting. Please
try to edit the connection for the device you don't use to access the
internet, go to the ipv4 tab, and under the Routes button, check the "use
this connection only for the resources in its network". Then please let us
know
