It appears I was wrong.  I just tested the USB device on another
computer, also running 10.04 and it worked without interfering with the
other connections on the computer.  However, a different usb to ethernet
device is also working without trouble on the original machine which had
trouble.  So both usb devices work, though the original still produces
the problems stated previously.  Any tips?
