I've just took a peek and it appears that the dependency is gone. Kudos!

Is this still a problem? We have just completed the gfortran transition
in hardy, which should close this definitively.

Yes there is. But without the detail information of the packages
installed on your system I can't give any suggestions.

I believe the situation is the same but as I don't have much experience
with "advanced" apt commands I can't say for sure. Personally I only use
Kubuntu's adept and, as it marked GCC 3.4 for installation and never
offered an option to avoid that or even an alternative, I thought that
there wasn't a

For starters possibly the r-recommended package could be turned into a
recommended package instead of a requirement. Without doing a thorough
analysis it seems that that metapackage (more precisely a single
requirement of that package) is the reason why R demands gcc 3.4

Also, I found that r-base-core depends on "atlas3-base | refblas3 |

I'm using edgy and according to the apt database, r-base depends of r
-base-core, which depends of gcc (>= 4.1.0) and libgfortran1 (>= 4.1.0),
not g77.
After a bit more digging, I found out that the only package that needs
GCC 3.4 is r-cran-mgcv, which depends of atlas3-base and libgfortran.
atlas
r-base-dev (2.3.1-1) depends upon gcc (>= 4:4.0)
The build depends of r-base is gcc (>= 4:4.0)
Are you using Edgy or Dapper?
Do you remember which bit of r-base had the dependency on gcc 3.4?

Easier said than Done.
R package depends on GCC 3.4 because R uses BLAS array/matrix library,
and both BLAS packages, refblas3 and atlas, use Fortran and are compiled
with g77. g77 only exists in GCC 3.4, and GCC 4.0 and higher replaced
g77 with gfortran, a completely new Fortran compiler. Howev
