This is definitely a hardware failure, marking as invalid. David, if
you're concerned about your hard drive, check the SMART status:

About being filled automagically, as far I could tell, it should be assisted
bug reporting.
Well, not sure it is a physical problem with the disk.
After all, there was indeed an error with hdc: PLEXTOR CD-R PREMIUM just before
it began reporting errors on ata3
Ah, I recall that install attempt. It failed repeatedly and I did try other
hard drives to install to. As I had wiped my system I reluctantly reverted
back to Windows XP in the end as I had only burnt the one Ubuntu disc and
couldn't install from that and had no other operating systems lying around
