Ah, I recall that install attempt. It failed repeatedly and I did try other
hard drives to install to. As I had wiped my system I reluctantly reverted
back to Windows XP in the end as I had only burnt the one Ubuntu disc and
couldn't install from that and had no other operating systems lying around
that I could get back up and running with.

In the end I decided that the error that I saw was that the CD-ROM drive
from which the install was being run from was failing. This happened about
three times before I gave up. I used two SATA Western Digital 120GB drives
as the install destination and was installing from a Plextor IDE CD-ROM
drive.

I had burnt the media slowly onto a decent disc and verified that before
attempting the install (knowing I was going to wipe my system). However the
install repeatedly failed at the same point (copying files) and it was the
CD-ROM LED indicator that would hang and the drive would appear to stutter
as it attempted to read the drive.

I can't recall submitting this bug (it was a while ago, and I would've
followed up if I had recalled it), was it done automagically?

I believed at the time that this was a hardware failure with the Plextor
drive as when I proceeded to install Windows XP I removed the CD-ROM and set
the DVD drive to be the bootable optical drive and that install went
smoothly. When I got back into Windows XP I again checksum'd the CD I had
burnt and it was fine. I also did a very basic sanity check to prove it was
fine by simply copying all files onto a local drive to see that I could
actually read all files.

So I believe the root cause was a failing IDE CD-ROM drive through the ATAPI
interface.

If it is the SATA HDD, then that is worrying as I'm still using that as my
primary hard drive today.
