Good news, the follow-up issue (https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=783376) has been resolved. This was fixed in
version 1.2-3 which has been synced to Ubuntu Xenial (the current
development version). I've tested with this version, and I've been able
to play the game without any prob

Even though the original issue here is supposed to be fixed, I still see
a similar problem when attempting to start glhack in Ubuntu 15.04. I was
also able to reproduce this in Debian Sid, so I have filed a follow-up
issue https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=783376

I have confirmed the bug as I am also experiencing this bug. Identical message
on the terminal while using Ubuntu 10.04. I get the intro screen load for a
second then the error message which throws me back to the terminal but leaves
the resolution at 800x600.
