- Are you sure that the disk partition containing your home directory is
not full?
- If you start Shotwell with a fresh database directory (e.g. 'shotwell
-d ~/foo'), does the assertion failure still occur?
- Are you able to build Shotwell 0.8 from source?

This definitely tells me that Sqlite cannot create the database. Can
you do the following and copy-and-paste the results to this ticket?
$ cd ~/.shotwell/data
$ ls -alF

This assertion means Shotwell was unable to create a database table.
This is a pretty fundamental error, some of the obvious reasons why
would be that the disk was full (*really* full, as an empty database
file isn't that large) or that the ~/.shotwell directory was read-only
or protected.
