Yesterday there were updates! I applied them via the update manager on
my Xubuntu 10.10 upgraded from 10.04, my clean installed Xubuntu 10.10
and my clean installed Ubuntu 10.10. In all three cases the updates were
still in /var/cache/apt/archives afterwards ...

I revived my Xubuntu 10.04 x86_64 (updated 86 packages) and saw that
/var/cache/apt cache was empty afterwards. The update-manager version was
1:0.134.11.

Is it reproducible? I do not know, all my three machines exhibit the symptom,
but two of those are clones of the first one.
