Sounds similar to the bug I reported #659244. I can copy mp3s to the
iPhone, and play iPhone mp3s through rhythmbox, but I can't play them on
the iPhone.

Basically on my iPod Classic, once the song is on the ipod the extension is
removed
i.e. in the Rhythmbox library, when you look at the file info, the filename is
"x-.mp3" but when you look at the file info for the song once its
synced to the iPod its just like "x-xxx. "

And for iPod Classic. Worked fine prior to Maverick upgrade.
Running Rhythmbox from the command line, I get the following output
(repeated at least once for each track) when adding tracks to the iPod:
** (rhythmbox:9198): CRITICAL **: itdb_splr_validate: assertion `at !=
ITDB_SPLAT_UNKNOWN' faile
Occurs for ipod Touch too
