I've had similar problems for a while now with a laptop with ATI Radeon
Mobility 9700.
A few editions of Ubuntu ago, it worked fine.
For 9.10 and 10.04, and maybe an edition or two before that, it's worked
intermittently, in the following way:
- After booting, it resumes correctly I guess about
same with ppa kernel 2.6.36-999-generic_2.6.36-999.201010151118_i386.deb

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.
