When looking further, it has to do with the content being printed in my
case. A test page works, a simple document as well. Things like a
firefox printout or pdf's fail depending on content. When printing a
'hanging' document this clogs up the total queue of course.

I have the same behaviour with a Laserjet 2100 network printer. HPLIP is
version 3.10.6-1ubuntu10.1, I can't select USB connection since it's only
connected by network.
Some content does print, other content keeps being 'processed' while green
light flashes at printer.

printing not working
I was having a similar problem. LaserJet 1320 didn't print at all or printed
randomly. I think the problem is that the automatic tool sets up LIP instead of
USB as printer URI. After I had changed it the printer started working.
