Yes, it seems to be fixed in 2.6.17, but are the Edgy ISO images
updated?

I would also like to know if there will be an updated Edgy install CD
available with this fix as I have almost the same problem.

Just curious: since this issue obviously affects the Edgy's LiveCD, does
that mean that 6.10.1 ISO images will be released with the updated
2.6.17 kernel?

Thank you so much for responding and providing the requested

now assigning the bug to the Ubuntu Linux kernel developers for further
analysis.

Hey,
Sorry it's taken me so long to respond, but I finally found some time
today to get this done. It literally takes half an hour for me to boot
from the live cd (it just sits after the kernel null pointer crashes
modprobe or something, but eventually boots). When it finally boots I
have no acces
Just a quick note: I realize that you already posted some of this
information (like dmesg output among other things), however, it would be
more helpful if you could repost it, from the same, latest kernel image
on Edgy release. Thanks a lot, Daniel!

Hi Daniel,
Thanks very much for checking this bug with the latest Edgy LiveCD. I
need the following information from you, collected using the latest Edgy
LiveCD:
1. Architecture of the machine (please confirm that it's a 32-bit Intel
machine). Providing the output of "uname -a" would be perfect.
Confirmed on the most current Edgy kernel and also on yesterday's Feisty
daily live cd. This bug NEEDS to get fixed. I can't use any recent
kernels or live cds because of it and the bug has been open for a long
time now. This should probably also be sent upstream to the kernel
folks.

Thanks for responding! Please let me know if the patch works. It would
also be useful to see if this issue has been patched in a later version
of the kernel. Are you running the latest kernel?

I am using amd64, mk8 motherboard, SATA promise and VIA onboard.
I will try the patch mentioned by Zoltan.

Is the same issue present in the latest package in Edgy release? If not,
then this bug should probably be closed.

The promise driver incorrectly reports three SATA ports on cards with
two SATA, one PATA port. After, when tries to initialise the third - in
fact the PATA port as SATA - it fails, and causes kernel oops.
Furthermore the additional PATA port in SATA controllers is currently
supported only in develp
Just a little more info, I tried to type in most of the output when
booting without the "quiet" and "splash" options. It eventually dumps me
into a Busybox shell from the initramfs but I couldn't figure out how to
save any of the output.
Begin: Mounting root file system...
Begin: Running /scripts/
I have the same problem as the poster of this bug. modprobe fails to
load the sata_promise kernel module because of a NULL derefence problem.
Tested with Edgy Knot3 and Edgy Beta.

This also happens to me after a dist-upgrade. The kernel package can't
create a ramdisk image, so system panics on boot, because it can't read
the disk partition.
