This was pilot error - I mistakenly read the screen which prompted for
username as asking for the iSCSI initiator ID, and had entered a value
on that screen, which explains why the installer insisted on a password.
I have repeated the install leaving the username field empty, and was
not prompted f
iSCSI may be authenticated or unauthenticated, but I wasn't aware that
you could provide a username without a password. RFC3720 refers to
RFC1994 for the definition of CHAP, which is the authentication method
we're using, and in section 2.3 it says "The CHAP algorithm requires
