Now I'm truly confused. I tried again turning off compression in
Maverick, and this time it saved the file properly. Now it doesn't make
a difference one way or another.
Whatever it was, turning on compression once has solved my particular
issue.

OK, I rebooted in Lucid and tried scanning with compression turned off.
The result wasn't any different visually from a compressed version, but
as expected it was a smaller file size.
As the average user won't know to do this, I think compression should be
considered as a workaround for Maverick r
AHA!
Turning on compression set to Automatic when saving the image produced a
perfect PDF in gray, in any resolution using libsane-perl as the
frontend.
I will check if the same option is turned on in Lucid next time I
reboot.

Yes - I also tried changing the color filter from green to red, and also
blue. I've also played around with different resolutions. Setting the
bit depth from 8 to 16 just messes up the scan, turning it into a gray
sludge.
It's working in gray with Xane. It also works with Simple Scan, but

No. You didn't. Have you tried turning off the clean-up operation
(unpaper)?

I scanned the same document with Simple Scan and had no trouble
producing a grayscale image. I'm no expert, but that seems to rule out
HPLIP as being the problem.
I just did the same scan with XSane to be sure it was gray (SimpleScan
doesn't specify between gray and B&W) and produced a perfect sca

I picked up another scanner last week - this time an HP 2300C flatbed.
It works perfectly in lineart and colour, but in grayscale it creates a
blank PDF in Maverick. The preview is fine.
I have the latest HP updates, including today's. It works flawlessly in
all modes in Lucid.

It sound to me like a bug in the hplip sane backend.
I suggest you reproduce this using the scanimage too
I just rescanned the same document with libsane-perl as the frontend
using Lucid. It's perfect.
Both use hplip.

I've tried all frontends with the same result, as mentioned earlier.

You did that scan with the libsane-perl frontend. Please try with the
scanimage frontend.

I'm still experiencing the grayscale split-screen problem in all
variations of the frontend. I tried 'completely removing' and re-
installing, but there was no difference.
It seems to be a Maverick problem as it works fine in Lucid.

I noticed that among the dependencies was one (and only one) in italics;
libarchive-tar-perl. It doesn't seem to be available in Synaptics or via

This is a recurrence of bug 412575. It seems I had other issues forcing
a re-installation of the entire OS.
I would prefer to avoid that this time.
