Steven: your filesystem(s) maybe got corrupt, which resulted in the
symptoms in the original post
José: that's another issue, search if there is a bug report available
and file one if not found.

I've got also the same problem. I don't get any bootchart log, and yes,
/var is not in the root filesystem. It seems boot tries to set up
network before mounting the filesystems.

My system soon after that decided to give up entirely, to the point
where there were more broken things than working. I decided to
reinstall from the latest edgy beta... sorry I can't do as you asked.
Maybe I just caught an unlucky combination of package versions that
conspired to wreck my system.

Could you install "bootchart", and then after a reboot attach the file
generated and placed in /var/log/bootchart for me

I have these:
/
/usr
/var
/home
/boot
on separate partitions. /boot is ext3 and the rest are jfs. All are, of
course, marked to mount at boot.

Ok, interesting -- do you have /usr on a separate partition?

And to my knowledge I have not messed with the logging facilities
much...

85-ifupdown.rules does exist.
/var/log/udev does not exist.

Shouldn't have done.
Could you also check that you have /etc/udev/rules.d/85-ifupdown.rules
for me
also attach /var/log/udev

Interesting. Looking at /etc/init.d/networking, it logs a message
saying "Configuring network interfaces..." and then runs ifup... But
maybe I'm just confused.
Anyway, here's ifconfig -a
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:8D:7E:90:D7
BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
/etc/init.d/networking isn't responsible for bringing up network
interfaces in edgy (or dapper)
Could you attach your /etc/iftab file and the output of "ifconfig -a"
for me (preferably before you run ifup yourself)
