Poked around a bit with libimobiledevice. Discovered the following: With absolutely no changes to the base Lucid install, installing iFuse from the repos allows access to my iPod via filesystem. Rhythmbox doesn't pick it up properly still, but the fact that iFuse (which uses libimobiledevice) work

Also try updating libimobiledevice. The version in Lucid is currently 0.9.7-1ubuntu1, however version 1.0.0 was recently released. See http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=ODA5Mg for more information. As you are on x86_64, note the entry in the Ubuntu changelog for libimobiledevice
