Poked around a bit with libimobiledevice. Discovered the following:
With absolutely no changes to the base Lucid install, installing iFuse
from the repos allows access to my iPod via filesystem. Rhythmbox
doesn't pick it up properly still, but the fact that iFuse (which uses
libimobiledevice) work
Also try updating libimobiledevice. The version in Lucid is currently
0.9.7-1ubuntu1, however version 1.0.0 was recently released. See

As you are on x86_64, note the entry in the Ubuntu changelog for
libimobiledevice

Given that the device is showing up in the udev logs, I imagine that
this isn't a problem with the kernel, but rather somewhere higher up the
stack. I will test with upstream kernel if you still think it is
necessary for some reason.
