Likely this bug is something in the linux kernel's nouveau drm driver.
If that's true, then booting a newer version of the kernel might resolve
it. Has anyone tested if this issue still exists with Lucid 10.04.4?

'gitk' in a different location after updating X and nouveau:

Also having the same issue in Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha, instantly reproducible
by running 'gitk' or 'hg view'. Something that Tcl/Tk is doing seems to
trigger the problem immediately.

Found a workaround via the Nouveau bug tracker to this which is to turn
off acceleration in Nouveau.
sudo touch /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau-kms.conf (guess it can be called
