Why is this bug marked as a duplicate of #546578, when this bug is an

It seems patching with xgamma and gnome-screensaver is indeed a
workaround for a problem in the ATI driver. This is what I conclude
after reading more bug reports. I cannot be sure as I do not experience

David,
I have to disagree with re-entangling two bugs, which seem to be copycats (i.e.
displaying similar behaviour).

Marcel, thanks for the help but bug 546578 is the same bug as this so we
need to keep it as the duplicate. It's really not a bug in gnome-
screensaver, that was changed just as a workaround.

Sorry for the many updates. I have read a few bug reports, initially
thinking my problem had to do with the gnome-screensaver. Now I can
confirm I had the same problem with my NVidia driver. I have an NVidia

I'm running Ubuntu 10.4 (Lucid) and I had this problem with getting a
black screen when switching users also.
Following Igor's advice fixed it for me.
The steps I took were:
1. Download the nvidia-96 96.43.18-0ubuntu1 package from
http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/nvidia-96

I can confirm too that on my Lucid the 173.14.27 packages seem to work just
fine and the login problem is solved.
Thanks alot, Igor!

It seems that this bug is fixed in Maveric, at least for 173 drivers
(173.14.27). I tested 173 and user switching works fine now. According
to the changelog the fix is also applied to 96.
There is no problem with installing 173.14.27 on Lucid:
1. download the packages by hand:

It's wierd, I've got two entries in Hardware Drivers: NVIDIA (173)

tried adding pre-released and unsupported updates but to no avail.

I got 195 when I switched the driver from 173 to 'latest version' in the

downloaded and installed the driver itself, you then press Activate, then
restart your computer.
You can then check the version by openi

I solved this on my machine by,

Select the latest version (recommended) nvidia driver. (bottom option)
Let it download, select apply and restart.

No video signal after "Log out" in gnome when multiple users
Hi
I have installed Ubuntu 10.04.
I have two users, myself and my partner.
I log in, do work, and then switch to my partner, she does work, etc.
if any one of us logs out, we get a blank screen, can do nothing and have to
reset the machine.
Nvidia driver 173.14.22
Using X64 bit.
Kernal 2.6.32.22
Same problem here, except that turning of Nvidia 173 always leaves the
'lonely mouse'. Even ctrl-alt-F1 does not show anything and returning to
ctrl-alt-F7 returns the mouse pointer on black background
