I see this problem if I using Oneiric latest daily live CD with fallback gnome
session.
I want prewious launch alacarte because I would like verify wwhy empty the
applications menu if I using GNOME3 with fallback mode.
I only installed with gnome-session-fallback package and required dependencies

solution: copy the menu files from /etc/xdg/menus to the user folder
~/.config/menus (which is empty by default)
