I can not say I am glad someone else but me got the bug, but I be more
confident. When I try a newer kernel like the 2.6.34, everything seems
to be fine again so it must be fixable relatively easy. And it used to
work perfectly in the older kernels.

I have the Huawei UMG1831 and I am experiencing this exact same issue.
Now, I needed to install usb-modeswitch and update my /etc/modules to do
a "modprobe usbserial vendor=0x12d1 product=0x1404" in order to get
Ubuntu 10.04 to see the device. If I boot the system with the USB stick
connected all
