I don't have a performance benchmark; I was trying to watch a video and
my hard disk started cranking and the video started skipping, after a
reboot, which is when I noticed that stuff was gone.
In any
32-bit I/O support is somewhat pointless if you're not doing PIO. I
/think/ that interupt-unmasking is only relevant in the PIO case as
well. Can you show some benchmarks of the difference in performance
between 2.6.15 and 2.6.17?

sata doesn't implement pio, to the best of my knowledge - all operations
are DMA.

I have also the same problems with hdparm and my sata drive.
hdparm -d and -u print nothing (only /dev/sda) and hdparm -i reports
"HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device"
lspci says:

*via SATA controller, with a Maxtor drive of course. VIA doesn't make
the hard drive, it makes the chipset with the controller on it.
