You're right! For some very weird reason I forgot universe on both my machines
in dapper-updates.

Neither on edgy nor on dapper I have recognized that issue, packages
installed without problems. Make sure you have enabled section universe
for dapper-updates, maybe that's it. It seems like you've forgotten
that. Totem is in main, totem-xine in universe. So if you only enabled
dapper-updates main
$ sudo apt-get install totem totem-xine
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
totem is already the newest version.
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some req
totem-xine doesn't need a dep on totem, totem is a dummy package to
install totem-gstreamer or totem-xine, why would it require a circular
Depends and to make the actual packages depend on the dummy one?
What does "sudo apt-get install totem totem-xine" do?

This is because totem-xine conflicts totem-gstreamer, so it tries to
remove totem-gstreamer, totem (which depends on either two of the
above), and ubuntu-desktop (which depends on totem)
Ah. totem-xine needs a dep of totem. Wonder why it doesnt have that.

can you paste the output of "apt-cache policy totem" please?
I cant reproduce this - only that totem-gstreamer conflicts totem-xine,
and vice versa.
Can you also paste your /etc/apt/sources.list please?
