The lines added were:
blacklist nouveau
blacklist vga16fb
I think it was added when I tried the XOrg ppa although I am not 100%
too sure.

might be an upgrade issue in another package that we'll want to get
fixed.

OK I found it!
It was in the nouveau blacklist I removed the file and it appears to work now.
I don't know how it crept in here. This was not a clean install it was an
upgrade from Karmic.

Damn it worked for two boots and now I am back to the text boot (I tried
six boots now). This is confusing...

Sorry for spamming here. On another reboot (no updates) the terminals
have decided to reappear at VGA resolution, yay. Also I have a graphical
shutdown (no startup but I guess its cause my boot times are around 12
seconds), all be in such a nasty resolution it looks like a toddler
drew it. So I am
OK after I did this mornings update things have changed for the worse. I dunno
what changed as there were ~125 updates.
I do get vga16fb loading:
~$ lsmod | grep vga
vga16fb12757 1
vgastate9857 1 vga16fb
I do not get a graphical boot.
All the tty terminals are

In the case where /proc/fb is empty, please log in on a text console and
run the following commands and paste the output here:
$ lsmod | grep vga
$ sudo modprobe vga16fb
please also check 'dmesg' afterwards for any errors.

When I uncomment the set gfxpayload = keep and GRUB_GFXMODE=1280x800 in
my 00_header and grub files I get a graphical boot but the terminals
are unusable.
