Well, after trying three times to reproduce this issue, I am not able
to. Unfortunately, the three installations have also overwritten the
logs from the first installation.

No, you should try to do it for xfce4-places-plugin, not update-manager
(see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace#Already%20running%20programs).
Find the pid of xfce4-places-plugin (e.g. with "ps faux | grep places")
and attach gdb to it. If there's a crash you should have a trace then.

I attempted to run update-manager and obtain a backtrace. Apparently,
'update-manager' is not a valid executable and will not run in gdb. I am
now running the upgrade again, using 'update-manger -d' without gdb
running and will attach the log files when it is finished
