No, you should try to do it for xfce4-places-plugin, not update-manager (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace#Already%20running%20programs). Find the pid of xfce4-places-plugin (e.g. with "ps faux | grep places") and attach gdb to it. If there's a crash you should have a trace then.
