I can confirm Rodrigo Alvarez' post #16 with Ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) and a
Brother DCP-165C. Printing works, but I could not get simple-scan, XSane
or Scanlite to work from the Applications menu or from the terminal.
Running simple-scan with sudo works like a charm, on the other hand.

Trying to scan using a cannon MP160 reports "unable to connect to the
scanner". If I run sudo simple-scan -d it works beautifully,
suggesting there are permission issues somewhere. Below is the output
of the non-sudo attempt. Please point me in the right direction as to

I got the same error:

Although it looks like scanning a photo works fine andgenerating jpg but
scanning text crashes simple-scan with the following bug

This might not have been the right bug - but anyway simple-scan was
complaining about a missing HP plugin. From hplip-gui there is an option
to in the device manager "Install Required Plugin". This failed with
what looks like a permission problem. So I ran it from the command line
sudo hp-plugin
I'm on 10.04 amd64
The printer/scanner is an HPLaserjet M2727nf
I can print but not scan.
Here's the output of simple-scan -d

In all three cases please attach the output of simple-scan -d, this will
show the communication between simple-scan and your scanner.
Wes, the fact that scanimage -L does not show your scanner shows there
is a problem with your scanner drivers. Could you please open a new bug
against sane-backend

I have an HP Pavilion dv5 with an integrated webcam. This issue affects
