I am also having the problem of system hanging at splash screen at shutdown.
But just an addition that I am having this problem since I installed Jaunty
And my current installation (Lucid) is not just an up-gradation of previous
versions but a fresh installation.

I suppose there is no grub file in /etc/default because after an upgrade you
still use the old grub.

Upgraded from Karmic (no problems) to Lucid (problem as above)
Have not tried altering the grub, but disabling the ethernet and then
shutting down works.

the nvidia settings are not remembered, so I have to reset System > Preferences
> Appearance > Visual Effects every time on startu
The problem seems to be solved (workaround) disabling the splash.
I´ve commented this line in the /etc/default/grub file:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to
#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
and after run update-grub2

I have the same problem. I can't shut down. This first happened after
upgrading from Karmic. I thought it might be a problem with the upgrade
process, so I did a clean reinstall. The problem reappears. Not sure
what info on my computer you might want, or what command to type to get
the info yo

Here is a screenshot. I can reboot it with a ctrl+alt+suppr, and before
rebooting it displays briefly a message about alsa-mixer-save.

Almost certainly a kernel/ACPI/etc. issue - could you try booting
without "splash" and let the devs know the last line printed on the
screen
