I am also having problems getting 5.1 sound. After messing with
'.asoundrc' and several other hacks, I was able to get 5.1 sound working
with a couple of players. However, now when I attempt to play something
with totem (xine), it kills 5.1 for the entire system. I end up with
stereo coming over 6

Incorrect 5.1 audio when playing DVD

I've tried out the Feisty i386 herd4 desktop CD.
This system has the following versions:
ALSA 1.0.14rc1
Totem 2.17.91
Gstreamer: 0.10.11.cvs20070110
Unfortunately I wasn't able to test a DVD, as I had the liveCD in my DVD
player. I have tested a video file with 5.1 AC3 sound instead. In this

like "channels=6:2:0:1:1:0". The first value is the number of channels
to output (6 in this case), the second is the number of routes (i.e.
channels we're going to move), then the next values are pairs of values:

Currently I have been able to "fix" the 5.1 sound when playing a DVD for
most players. I've got two soundcards: an internal card and the Audigy 2
ZS. Disabling the internal soundcard in the BIOS solves most of the 5.1
playback problems.

channels=nch[:nr:from1:to1:from2:to2:from3:to3:...] audio filters?
Although, it's odd that the channels are only mixed up in Ubuntu. Have
you tried using an updated version of ALSA?
