I am also having problems getting 5.1 sound. After messing with
'.asoundrc' and several other hacks, I was able to get 5.1 sound working
with a couple of players. However, now when I attempt to play something
with totem (xine), it kills 5.1 for the entire system. I end up with
stereo coming over 6 speakers and no way to change it no matter what I
choose in VLC.

If I restart the system, 5.1 is back again. I don't know what service is
causing this to fail. The fact that ubuntu does not recognize and use
5.1 sound when hooked up to a capable soundcard (without a series of
hacks accompanied by liberal swearing), renders it quite useless as an
HTPC which is the primary function of my system. This is beyond
frustrating.
