I'm rather curious about this myself. I got the same results both times
I ran the installer, then realized that /dev/hda wasn't working. Does
the installer write log files to the ramdisk set up by the LiveCD? If
so, I can run the installer again and check the logs.

I do find that very hard to believe. The error checking at that point is
if anything rather too careful; I get bug reports about it firing when
it shouldn't, so I have difficulty imagining how it could fail to notice
a totally broken hard disk. Is it possible that the disk broke only just
recently?

I finally figured this out. The hard drive totally crashed. I can't
even touch it with the LiveCD or several other rescue disks. Fdisk
refuses to see the hard drive.
