I finally figured this out. The hard drive totally crashed. I can't even touch it with the LiveCD or several other rescue disks. Fdisk refuses to see the hard drive. What surprises me is that the installer reports that it is formatting the drive, copying files, etc., and doesn't crash until the grub installation fails at around 98% completion. None of this could possibly be happening, since the drive is totally non-functional. So I guess there's still a bug in the installation routines reporting that things are happening when they are not.
