I have had a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing so I think I
know what to do. You can ignore my last 2 questions as this link answers
them for me. I can get access to a second machine to log into my laptop
through ssh. I will log a new bug once I have done the relevant testing.

Regarding the need to ssh into the locked-up system in order to get the
logs:
1: Do you mean to ssh into the locked up system from another computer on
the network? If you mean something else (ssh localhost??) please say. I

You need to install the openssh-server package. Note that this opens up
your computer for attacks, but ssh is probably one of the most secure
servers you could have on your computer as long as you have good

... and once you're logged in, you can just copy the log files to your
home directory so that you can upload them the next time you start your
computer.

I understand that this bug is closed for the reason stated by Geir but I
am having a similar problem to the one as stated by Torstein . When I
play with water effects in Compiz, X crashes, logs me out of the desktop
and brings me back to the login in screen. Is this the same bug? And if

It turns out that on 965GM the GPU gets reset before the dump of the
error is recorded, so the information that is attached does not useful.
By using the newest drm-intel-next kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com
/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-next/ the error information should be
recorded in i915
