i think this bug appears wherever Maverick Beta testers did early customization
of packages in order to get the transitional solutions "indicator complete" etc
working, as they were still in heavy development.
Now, the workaround that helped me, was to "sudo apt-get remove indicator-me*"
and aft

ah ha! no it wasn't...any reason why that would be removed? I don't
"recall" uninstalling it, but perhaps I enabled a PPA that did that?

the issue there doesn't seem to be a sound indicator one, Robbie are you
sure you have an indicator applet on your gnome-panel? can you try to
add it again to make sure of run a guest session and see if it has the
issue?

Robbie, when you run gnome-volume-control-applet you get the old
notification area icon which we don't start in lucid, the description of
you issue simply suggest you removed the applet which contain all the
indicators

Intend to work on this this week. The way the libindicator api works
inhibits the proper use of GtkIcon's. I think I have a work around
though. Expect a fix for Beta 1.

Well this is not a hardware-specific issue.
Simply it is an icon-theme-specific issue.
For example icon-themes gnome and tangerine have no indicator sound icon.

My issue came down to the fact that I had removed indicator-session from
my panel in a previous release because it wasn't doing anything relevant
to me, and I didn't realize this was the same thing as the current
indicator-session. So not hardware-specific, and not a bug that I can
see.

Okay, so I looked *closely* at the gnome-volume-control-applet and that
is *NOT* the same as what should be showing in the indicator-applet
section. As previously mentioned, my Acer AMD64 and Dell Mini 9 are
showing the *correct* sound icon in the indicator applet section, and if
