I confirm speakers had melted on my T510.
I have sent my laptop for repair at lenovo and so far the issue has not
re-occured. I did disable the always-on USB feature though.

Please be careful. The above is the package version of the alsa-base

You can verify the functioning of the hardware via the bootable diagnostic CD
available for download on the Lenovo support site.
I have the same problem with no sound on my T510 - but in my case it was due to
meltdown of my left speaker.
To verify if this is true for you too, follow the service m

This issue with melting speakers has been confirmed on the t410 now.
You guys should probably call lenovo. You can keep your hard drives when you
send it in, just don't mention Linux. I believe your speakers are broken!

Oh yeah, and have tried every combination of settings possible both in
Windows and Linux, no go. Really does seem like the hardware is toast.

As far as I can tell on the W510 the only way to get at the CMOS battery
is to nearly completely disassemble the machine. Not sure I'm
comfortable doing that and risking my warranty, unless I can find some
documentation somewhere telling me that it is definitely a task that
won't void it.
Just fo
I'm no expert at this stuff so forgive the misuse of terminology, but it
is also possible that these settings are stored in nvram or bios or
something. You should consider a bios reset, including removing the CMOS
battery.

That's encouraging, at least it isn't entirely broken!
I don't have Windows installed anymore, but there is a feature of the Windows
driver that is worth investigating.
There's that Connextant sound options application, which lets you determine how
the headphone switch is used.

Same thing here on my T510.
Sound stopped to work in Karmic 3 weeks after installing it.
Now booting to Windows, I don't have sound in there too, only head phones are
working :(

One more thing that may be obvious, but worth saying: Try using
headphones, the speakers may be garbage. The Lenovo forums are full of
audio-related complaints for various t4xx laptops, I even saw a picture
of a melted speaker assembly.
There's a useful RSS feed on the support/downloads page for y
Interestingly enough on the Windows side there's an updated audio driver
which lists this in its changelog:

system experiences an improper shutdown

I'd test my audio in Windows, but the stupid support DVD burning process failed
so now i'm a permanent Linux user!
Audio is still properly functioning on my T510 with identical audio hardware,
though.
If you need some sort of firmware dump just post here.

Have you tried removing your main and CMOS batteries? The CMOS battery
is a CRU (customer replacable unit), you can play with it without
voiding your warranty. I really hope that would solve it, firmware
issues are scary!

I found another Ubuntu user on the Lenovo forums who had lost sound on
his system with this model after a crash. Unfortunately his machine had
to be repaired by Lenovo.
I am concerned there is something causing actual hardware damage here!

I ended up reformatting my machine with Windows using the original
system disks and it seems my audio is not working in Windows anymore
either. I am going to continue testing but at this point it seems my
audio hardware is physically not functional for some reason or another.

Sound worked for me initially, but "something" in Ubuntu occurred which
has now disabled sound. Sound is non-functional in both Karmic and
Lucid (I have my system set up as dual boot)
Volume settings, etc do not seem to help, not sure how to further
troubleshoot this.

The orange mute LED does not always reflect whether audio is muted in alsa or
pulseaudio, but I think it functions at the hardware level.
