Well, in a case like this you will have to settle to the "lowest common
denominator", that is, the lowest-highest possible resolution for both
of your screens. For example, if your laptop's screen supports
1400x1150, but your external LCD screen only supports 1024x768, then
you're stuck with the lo
Of course that would solve solve the problem nominally. However lowering the
resolution on LCD screens looks ugly. However I would't describe my current
situation as a bug but rather as a missing feature.

generate the xorg.conf file and setting "DesktopSetup" to "mirror". This way
when it boots it mirrors the laptop screen on my external monitor, with a
screwed up resolution and showing only part of the display (on the
Does setting "DesktopSetup" to "clone" help at all? Will the laptop
still work as desired if you don't have it docked/hooked up to an
external monitor? Will X load at all?
Hopefully this change will still work in single monitor mode and let you
"hotplug" an external monitor/dock without requiring
Correction: running ot not running fireglcontrolpanel has no effect. It
appears that restarting X solves the problem in a non deterministic way:
sometimes it needs to be restarted more than once.
