Rouben,

I had forgotten about this. I got it sort of working using aticonfig to
generate the xorg.conf file and setting "DesktopSetup" to "mirror". This way
when it boots it mirrors the laptop screen on my external monitor, with a
screwed up resolution and showing only part of the display (on the external
monitor). Then I use aticonfig to enable only the external monitor
# aticonfig --enable-monitor=crt1
which fixes the issues with the resolution. I think I have tried the clone
option as well. If I remember correctly it fixes the desktop size to that of
the laptop screen (1400x1150). The external monitor looks fine except that
the desktop is bigger than the screen.
