Here is the answer guys, on how to do it without changing the effects:
1) Open a terminal o press ALT+F2, then run/type: gconf-editor
2) Go to /desktop/gnome/remote_access and enable "disable_xdamage"

That is not a fix it's just a workaround.Some of us use compiz for window
rules etc.. so this won't fix the problem.

I had the same problem as others here. Tried the 'System, Preferences,
Appearance, Visual Effects, None. That fixed it for me.

until we get a true "Fix" for this, try going to the visual effects tab (right
click on desktop, change desktop background, select the Visual Effects tab, and
select the radio button for "None" So far, this allows me to access the desktop
via Vinagre with no real issues... if ANY of the desktop
I would like to know that too. In Hardy remote desktop seemed to be
working fine, but now it is totally useless.

I have had this issue when connecting from a mac to various ubuntu machines.
I just did a fresh install of ubuntu 9.10 & got all the updates.
Remote Desktop worked fine...
Then..
I took a few small steps to set up netatalk for file sharing with my mac, and
started having this issue.

I just disabled the proprietary driver, and it seems to work, suggest
that Compiz could be part of the issue... I enabled the proprietary
driver, and as long as the appearance settings are set to "Visual
effects = none" then it will refresh... as soon as Compiz is involved on
the remote desktop, th
I am having the same issue, and yes, I am running Compiz on both
computers... one intel 64 bit, with pseudo Nvidia "Sparkle 9600 1GB RAM"

This happens when compiz is enabled on the remote host. Interestingly,
the version in debian squeeze (or the way it was implemented in debian)
is working fine.
