I have had this issue when connecting from a mac to various ubuntu machines. I just did a fresh install of ubuntu 9.10 & got all the updates. Remote Desktop worked fine... Then.. I took a few small steps to set up netatalk for file sharing with my mac, and started having this issue. I tried to undo the things i did in netatalk config, to no avail. A blank white screen shows up when i connect from my mac, yet my cursor movements are translated to the remote ubuntu machine.
