I believe that this bug has been corrected in Ubuntu hardy
openoffice.org 1:2.4.0~rc2-1ubuntu3 so I am marking it as Fix Released.
If after upgrading you continue to have problems with this issue then
feel free to reopen this bug.

files.odt is set to default language of English (UK) so when you go to
spellcheck with English (US) spellings in it makes you change to the US
dictionary for each word. If you wanted to have the entire document be
English (USA)
It basically makes spell checking impossible, unless you're so lucky
that your language is English USA ;-)
I wonder: isn't this an Openoffice bug? I could not find that out from this
