It's rather weird. I had set it to stereo as it was the only way the sound was
bearable. I altered the SB X-Fi profile in the Volume Control configuration tab
and something is quite wrong.
I just tested this setup in Windows just to make sure (it works there),

This is most definetly a pulse audio bug. I managed to work arround this
bug and keep pulse audio (and it fully works!). What I did was the
following:
1.) Remove pulseaudio by removing the "pulseaudio"-package and all its
dependencies in Synaptic and reboot.
2.) Download asoundconf utility for ub
It is not fixed for me. I still have the bug.
It is not present when volume is maximal (100%), but as soon as I lower sound
level the static appears.
So I have sound maximal now and I select a suitable sound volume via the volume
nob on my speaker-set.

I had this bug too, but looks like in the latest update i don't have it
anymore. Does it still happen to you? Maybe was a pulseaudio update that
resolved the problem.
