Just for reference:
The password protection mechanism at least for XLS files (not sure about
XLSX) s not considered to actually be secure. Its more like telling
someone to not mess with the file as it is trivial to remove the
password if wanted for nefarious purposes.

I haven't had a chance to go further. I opened the file in Windows with
Open Office 3.0, unprotected it and saved it with a new name. I then
loaded it in 3.1 under Linux, protected it and saved it and it works. I
won't know if I can repeat the condition. ONe strange thing now is that
I can open it
Any luck in narrowing down the issue? Without the file it is not
possible to diagnose. One option might be filling the file with junk
information.
