Just for reference:

The password protection mechanism at least for XLS files (not sure about
XLSX) s not considered to actually be secure. Its more like telling
someone to not mess with the file as it is trivial to remove the
password if wanted for nefarious purposes.

I believe that the ODF encryption is considered to be truly secure, at
least when it is working correctly.
