I have solved this problem by running the sharpfonts script from
http://www.sharpfonts.com/ and renaming /etc/fonts/local.conf to
/etc/fonts/local.backup.conf
Now all fonts are rendered properly in firefox, openoffice, screenlets,...
My 9.10 is a clean install.

I can confirm that the firefox-3.5 package for Karmic has weird font
rendering. On a lot of pages, the font is simply too small or is not
rendering properly. It seems that fonts that should be rendered as
Times New Roman or Arial are being replaced by another font for some
reason. I have attache
