This bug is a very important regression in Karmic and there is also

person how reported that bug are stilll left in a lurch without a method
to change the desktop modes (you need to get to UNR, he needs to ge

This is not a duplicate of 463915 which makes no mention of the fact
that upgrading from jaunty to karmic while in desktop mode permanently
disables UNR mode.
