This issue was originally filed against Karmic. The original submitter
has stated that he has an acceptable workaround and doesn't consider
this an issue any longer.
If this is still an issue, please open a new bug for it and attach all
relevant logs.

I have reopened it because Corruptor1972's solution doesn't work.
But thanks to it I think I managed to get to the bottom of the problem: Linux
doesn't know I have a IR reciever.

So I still need to set up irexec
I'm affected too.
My laptop is an HP Pavilion dv6660ep, with ubuntu 10.10.
LIRC never worked (since ubuntu 9.10), even with tons of different
configurations.
mode2 and irw never showed anything but errors.
I'll try to send the apport-collect info. If I can help in anything
else...

In 9.10 this has worked from time to time, and I'm pretty convinced it
varies between the kernel versions.
In 10.04 LTS (Release Candidate) updates as of today, it does not work
again.
I will try to follow what you ask me to do, and report back. Thanks for
