The most confusing thing of all is the "service" field in the config for
DSL. There are so many protocols and possibilities to type in this
field. To top that off, I have no clue what networkmanager even
supports.

I would be happy to help. I have some changes already to this document,
but the massive amount of different protocols is intimidating me. To
further this, there is absolutely no decent documentation that I can
find anywhere on DSL with Network Manager. Our pitiful three steps are

Anish, is there a bug report open for DSL connections not working at all
in Ubuntu? If so, please let us know the bug number - that is relevant
to this report. What I said in my previous statement is that this bug
is a request to have important documentation added, not to provide
technical suppor
Connor Imes is wrong.
The Network manager in Karmic is buggy and does not work as far as a DSL
connection is concerned (a process called Evolutionary regression).
What is the need for a documentation when the software is not working?

I'm not the sort of Linux geek but find my ways through sometimes. This time
however I decided to upgrade my notebook's OS from Ubuntu 9,04 to Ubuntu 9,1
and to my surprise my computer lost the internet connection. I firstly thought
